Banks and Post Offices

Banks and post offices offer almost the same types of financial services. Regular hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. for post offices), Monday through Friday. To open an accomt, bring your foreign registration card and personal stamp (if you have one) and apply at the window. When you open an account, you can also apply for a cash card. With the cash card, you do not have to wait at the window but can use automatic teller machines (ATMs) and cash dispensers (CDs) installed at the bank or post office to deposit and withdraw cash, update the passbook balance, check the balance, remit money (domestically), and so forth. With the cash card, you can also use ATMs and CDs of other banks and Shinkin banks to withdraw cash and check the balance. In this case, a fee will be charged to your account. A fee will also be charged when you withdraw cash in the evening, as well as on Sundays and holidays.
