Calling 119

Dial 119 to report a fire. As 119 is used for both fire fighting and ambulance dispatch, be sure to first tell the officer on the line whether your call concerns a fire or ambulance, your name, place (or address) and a landmark near the place (an address), if there is one. Therefore, it's important for you to know how to say your address in Japanese. Calling 119 from public phones is the same as calling 110. As a matter of course, mobile phone is available to call 110 and 119.

If A Fire Breaks Out

If a fire breaks out, try to extinguish it at an early stage, while informing your neighbors of the fire in a loud voice. However, if the fire reaches the ceiling, it is too dangerous for you to put it out. Call the fire department and ask your neighbors for help. When trying to get away from the fire, be sure to crouch down low and cover your mouth and nose with a towel in order to avoid inhaling toxic gases.

How to Use A Fire Extinguisher

The following are the three basic steps of using a fire extinguisher: 1) remove the safety pin; 2) pull the hose from the cylinder and aim the nozzle toward the fire; and 3) squeeze the lever. Since it may be difficult to avoid panicking when a fire breaks out, it is therefore important to know how to use your fire extinguisher before it happens. There are also fire extinguishers installed at 690 locations throughout the city. Find one near you.
